Online Couples Therapy

with Dr Georgina Dobson | HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist

Relationships can be deeply rewarding, but they can also be complicated and difficult to navigate sometimes. Even couples who love and care deeply about one another can find themselves caught in patterns of communication, conflict or disconnection that are difficult to understand or change on their own.

You might find yourselves having the same arguments without reaching a resolution, struggling to communicate your needs, feeling misunderstood or increasingly distant from one another. Perhaps trust has been damaged, you're navigating a significant life change, or you've noticed that the closeness and connection you once shared feels harder to find. Equally, you might have a generally happy relationship but want to strengthen your communication, deepen your understanding of one another or invest in your relationship before difficulties arise.

Couples therapy offers a space for both partners to feel heard, explore their experiences and develop a greater understanding of the patterns shaping their relationship. Sometimes, couples become caught in cycles where one person's response unintentionally triggers a reaction in the other, which then reinforces the original difficulty. For example, one partner might withdraw when feeling overwhelmed, whilst the other seeks more reassurance or closeness. The more one withdraws, the more the other seeks connection, leaving both feeling frustrated as neither person's needs are being met. Rather than seeing each other as the problem, we can begin to recognise the pattern itself as something you're both caught in, and work together to find different ways of responding.

My approach draws on systemic and relational perspectives, alongside research-informed principles from Gottman-informed couples work. Together, we can explore the ways you communicate, manage conflict and maintain emotional connection, whilst also considering how your individual histories, attachment experiences and wider circumstances may influence your relationship. Our work may involve developing practical strategies, exploring underlying emotional needs and finding new ways of understanding and responding to one another.
